New Orleans students were shocked after they found out that their data on web is available for anyone who seeks for it. More than 80,000 student’s personal information as names, addresses, ZIP codes, birthdates and Social Security numbers were accessible for any internet user for about two years. Identity thieves could use such information for counterfeiting checks, applying for the job, getting an apartment or simply applying for a driver’s license. After WDSU-TV found this information it was removed. Louisiana constitution guarantees the right to privacy which includes Social Security numbers so the institution responsible for this incident may start looking for a lawyer.
