The handbag world is abuzz with talk of Katherine Kwei’s delicate and modern, Eastern inspired handbags. After designing for names like Louis Vuitton and Zac Posen, her debut handbag line launched in 2007. Her intricately knotted handbags, inspired by the Chinese “Eternity” knot weave has made waves in the fashion world.
As a child, Katherine Kwei was inspired by the Chinese robes and embroidery owned by her grandmother. She had a love for arts and crafts and after graduating college, began working PR for Louis Vuitton in Hong Kong. She soon decided to persue a master’s degree in accessory design at the London College of Fashion. Now armed with technical knowledge, she knew she wanted to start her own line. She worked with already established designers while working on her own line. It took five years of hard work to finally preset her line to the public.
Katherine Kwei’s new Fall 2008 designs are unique and intricate, modern with a sense of playfulness about them. They incorporate unique materials such as lamb skin, calf skin, snake skin, and patent leather. The Eastern tradition is evident in the leatherwork—some handbags draw inspiration from Chinese lanterns—and this is blended with modernity to create handbags with a sophisticated, worldy feel to them: perhaps this is because Kwei has lived in so many different cities all over the globe (Athens, London, Dubai, Hong Kong, and New York). Rather than emblazoning her handbags with a logo, she uses her signature knotting technique to represent her brand. All of the complex knots must be done by hand and some bags may take 10-15 hours.
Katherine Kwei’s handbags have been featured in Elle, Nylon, The New York Times, WWD Accessories, and more. Her bags are available to purchase online at Katherine Kwei online, Active Endeavors, Lux Couture, and 20 Unlimited.
