The handbag world is abuzz with talk of Katherine Kwei’s delicate and modern, Eastern inspired handbags. After designing for names like Louis Vuitton and Zac Posen, her debut handbag line launched in 2007. Katherine Kwei’s new Fall 2008 designs are unique and intricate, modern with a sense of playfulness about them. They incorporate unique materials such as lamb skin, calf skin, snake skin, and patent leather. The Eastern tradition is evident in the leatherwork—some handbags draw inspiration from Chinese lanterns—and this is blended with modernity to create handbags with a sophisticated, worldy feel to them: perhaps this is because Kwei has lived in so many different cities all over the globe (Athens, London, Dubai, Hong Kong, and New York). Rather than emblazoning her handbags with a logo, she uses her signature knotting technique to represent her brand. All of the complex knots must be done by hand and some bags may take 10-15 hours.
