Although Pentagon undergoes hundreds of hacker’s attacks everyday, this one seems to be rather serious. Defense Secretary Robert Gates, however, stated that “this one had no adverse impact on department operations.”
Pentagon’s computer server, together with email system was penetrated on Wednesday. More than 1,500 employees lost their email service that day. Moreover the system was harmed rather fairly, so it’s not on-line yet.
The source of this attack and the abilities of hacker were not commented on. It is unknown whether the emails could be read, but even if it was, it doesn’t contain any military or other very important and secret information, only administrative manners. The only comment was that the nature of attack was detected early enough to stop it without any serious damage done.
However, the authorities had to take down a part of a system just as the attack was noticed, which never happened after other penetrations, but no one could explain why such a serious measurements were used. The guess is made, that this attack which also contained the Department of Homeland Security may be done on purpose to change or alter names of some persons. The operation that could be done by terrorists or nation states would allow certain individuals to access the country. However, Mr. Gates said that “this hack only caused administrational disruptions and personal inconveniences.”
If the penetration was successful, a number of people could access the country without any problems and nobody would even notice that. This could cause a great damage in case of terrorism. Gladly the hackers’ attack was noticed and stopped just at the right time and didn’t cause any harm.
Although a part of computer’s server was shut down, the work still goes on and the information is considered to be safe.
When asked about his own email, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said he was a low-tech person, so he wouldn’t use it at all.
