Phishing is a criminal activity of using social engineering techniques. People called phishers seek for such sensitive information, such as usernames, passwords, credit card details. The most popular targets are such websites as eBay, E-gold and online banks. Phishers attempt to allure internet visitors to create a profile in a fake website that looks just like the original one in order to steal money from users’ accounts or occupy their identities.
To protect internet users from phishers attacks blacklist has been created. Blacklist is the basis for the anti-phishing features. It also contains a list of known phishing sites. All users who apply their personal information, especially credit card detail, should have one to be sure their using the real site and are safe to place the information. Although internet phishers are always one step forward as they move their sites around, blacklists have been proved to be effective. Using this list properly together with your own accuracy will make your personal information safe.
Not only are the sites that could provide phishers with money attacked. They use such popular sites as MySpace (popular social networking site) to spread bulletin board spam which usually contains links to the sites that could work for steeling some money. Phishers also use social networking profiles to get the email information of the user and after hacking it, get some financial information.
There are some things that could help in ending phishing and assure your own safety:
1. Be suspicious about any email that requires your financial information. Before answering it, make sure it’s personalized and you know why and to whom exactly you are sending the information. Avoid filling out forms in email messages, chats and sites with your financial information;
2. Don’t use links to get to any web page if you’re not sure who’s the sender and why are you receiving that link;
3. Always make sure you’re using a secure website before applying sensitive information, such as credit card details, passwords ant other to it;
4. Many programs have been created on purpose to protect you from fraudulent sites. These programs will alert you if you’ll visit a phisher website;
5. Log into your accounts regularly;
6. Check the actions that were done with your credit card regularly to ensure that all transactions are legitimate or made by yourself;
7. Make sure your browser is up to date and all security patches are applied;
8. Regularly update your software and use anti-virus programs;
9. Use different passwords on every single account you have and change them regularly.
